CVC words with Malayalam meanings

More than a hundred short words to read, grouped by their vowel, each with its Malayalam meaning so your child knows what they have read.

What is a CVC word?

Consonant, Vowel, Consonant. In cat, c and t are consonants and a is the vowel. Every letter makes its simplest sound, with no tricks, so a child who knows the letter sounds can read every one of these words by blending.

The meaning matters as much as the sounds. A Malayali child who reads hen and knows it means കോഴി has truly read the word, not just said it. That is why each word below comes with its Malayalam meaning.

How to use these lists

  • Start with the short a list: it uses the sounds most children learn first.
  • Read five words a day. Say the sounds, blend, then say the meaning together: "h-e-n, hen, കോഴി".
  • Mix lists once two vowels are known, so your child must look at the middle letter: pan or pin? hot or hut?
  • Words marked with an asterisk (*) are words Malayalam has borrowed, like ബസ് for bus: easy wins, because your child already knows them.

Words that look like CVC but are not

A few short words break the pattern, so leave them out of early practice:

  • was, the, one, two, you, are: these are "tricky words" that children learn by sight later.
  • Words ending in x (box, six, fox) use two sounds for one letter (/k/ /s/). They are fine once x has been taught.
  • Words with ck (duck, sock) or ll, ss, ff (bell, kiss, puff) use two letters for one sound. Teach them after the single letters.

Make it a game

  • Change one letter: cat, hat, hot, hop, top, tip. Each step changes one sound.
  • Real or silly? Mix real words with made-up ones (pim, dat). Children love spotting the silly ones, and it proves they are reading, not guessing.
  • Draw it: your child reads a word and draws it. Bonus points for drawing a cat on a mat.

Every word in these lists appears in Kutty Phonics games, such as Word Train, Missing Sound and the snake boat race, once your child has learnt its sounds.
