Why English needs vowel teams
English has only five vowel letters (a, e, i, o, u) but about twenty vowel sounds. To write the extra sounds, it pairs letters up: ee for the long sound in tree, oa for the long sound in boat. Each pair (or triple, like igh) is called a *vowel team* or vowel digraph.
For Malayali children this part is often easier than the short vowels, because Malayalam already has separate letters for long vowels and diphthongs: ഈ, ഊ, ഏ, ഓ, ഐ, ഔ.
The vowel teams and their Malayalam twins
| Letters | Sounds like | Words |
|---|---|---|
| ai | എയ് | |
| ee | ഈ | |
| igh | ഐ | |
| oa | ഓ | |
| oo | ഉ | |
| oo | ഊ | |
| ar | ആർ | |
| or | ഓർ | |
| ur | എർ | |
| ow | ഔ | |
| oi | ഒയ് | |
| er | അർ |
The ones that need care
- ai (rain): in English this is a glide, "ay-ee". Kerala English often says a plain ഏ (rain becomes റേൻ). Both are understood; the glide sounds more natural to English ears.
- ee and short i: keep them apart. sheep stretches (ഈ), ship is quick (ഇ).
- oo has two sounds: short in book, foot, cook (like ഉ) and long in moon, spoon, food (like ഊ). Teach them as two different sounds.
- ar, or, ur, er: Kerala English pronounces the r (ആർ, ഓർ); British English drops it. Either is fine for reading. What matters is that ar in car, or in fork and ur in turtle are three different sounds.
- ow and oi: both are glides, like ഔ and ഒയ്. At the end of a word, oi is usually spelt oy (boy, toy).
How to practise
- Teach one team per day or two, with its Malayalam twin.
- Read three or four words with it, using the pictures to check meaning.
- Play "spot the team": in any word, find the two letters working together and underline them.
- Mix two teams that are easy to confuse: ai and ee (rain, tree), ar and or (car, fork).
In Kutty Phonics, world 6 (Vallam Kali) teaches ai, ee, igh and oa, world 7 (Onam) the two oo sounds, ar, or, ur and ow, and world 8 (Kathakali) oi and er, before magic e. Fish Sort sorts ai from ee and ar from or.
